Film Poster Forms and Conventions
Takers(2010)
Director: John Luessenhop
Plot:
The movie is about a group of bank robbers who go under the name of "takers" plan to hesit 20 million dollas, by hijacking an armed car carrying the money. However as the group and seting out there plan on the hesit they are unaware of that a reckless police office is ever close into catching the crimals.
Connotation/Denotation:
This poster is a typical thriller poster due to its very low key lighting, this maybe because this group of men wish to hide there true idenity from the outside world and keep themselves seperate from the world. One of the men is wearing a white suit from the rest of the group, this could symbolise that he is the boss of the group due to he stands out more and is different from the others and dosent want to be with the group but rather above the group. Also the man below him who is slouched in the chair comes across cocky, this is a typical thriller character. He could bend the rules within the movie and dosent follow orders like the others of the group and takes matters into his own hands. There are a few drinks on the table in front of the men; inculding a bottle of champaigne in ice. This shows that these men are used to the high life getting what they want when they want. Also there is a weapon (gun) on the table this shows that is possible volients within the movie, but also that this group of men will do anythink to get what they want and/or need; this is also show through the tag line "EVERYONES AFTER SOMETHINK". The title of the monie "Takers" is is big bold lettering, this stands out on the film poster, which i feel that the group wish to come across also; big and bold. Finally there is a city out line in the back ground, this is typical as most thrillers are within the city life style, but also due to these men are all higher than the city and its behind them, this could possible show that this group own the city and what they do and/or say goes! or is this what the men wish to believe.
The Adjustment Bureau (2011)
Director - George Nolfi
Plot:
This is about a man David (Damon) who sees hes furture fate and chooses that he dosent wish to persue this fate and dose whatever he can to avoid it. However when doing so he bumps into a woman Elise (Blunt) but she is unlike any women that david has ever ment and he wish to be with her. but unware that a mysterious men are trying to keep this couple apart. david has then a choice to make, to either let the women of his dreams go and has to except hes fate or to risk it all for the life of hes life.
Connotation/Denotation:
This poster is not as typical thriller as it dosent have low key lighting, however it is in other aspects. This is includes such things as its based in the middle of a city setting. But on the building there is a broad shadow figure, this could show that this person has taken over the city and he is ruler, and that even know he is not seen you can not hide from him whoever this character is. The man character (Matt Damon) is typical dressed as he is a suit and looks smart, and the woman is also dressed typically as she is in a dress as looks like a femfatal (a women who uses her sexuality to get whats hse wants). However as she is in a red dress this could symbolise that she is dangerous or even in danger herself and could also possible be working for the shadow figure in secert. The poster contains no weapons of any sorts, so could show that there is not a lot of voilents within this movie, than there possibly is in the preivous poster. Finally the title of the movie "the Adjustment Bureau" is in the colour red, this may emphasise that this gang are drangerous and a possible threat to the two main characters on the poster.
Tell No One (2006)
Director - Guillaume Canet
Plot:
8 years have passed and Alex still cant get over the lost of his wife who was brutally mudered. So when two bodies are found where Alex's wifes body was dumpped, Alex becomes the first suspect on the poilces list. but to through even more confusion in the works Alexs also recivces a email from hes late wife, with a picture of her looking older.
Connotation/Denotation:
This poster dosent come across as typical thriller due to the bright colours or no weapons of any sort with this poster. However it dose in other places of the poster, for example, the women who takes up most of the poster is all in red, this could mean the same as in the previous poster that either she is dangerous and is a threat or she is the one who is trouble herself, but she dose come across as another femfatal which makes its a typical thriller movie. there is a man in a white shirt is runnning. This could either mean that he is running toward the woman to save her or either way from her because she is threat to him. He is a typical thriller character as he is dressed smartly and is middle aged. The title "Tell No One" could mean that there is a secret within this movie and that the man wish to find out this secret and will do whatever it takes. there is also a city behind the man which is typical as most thriller are within the city. Finally the back ground is white yet it has a crumbled look, this could symblise that what was once pure, clean and sacred is now dirty and tanted.
